Under Hong Kong's Telecommunications (Registration of Subscriber Identity Cards) Regulation, local voice and data prepaid SIM cards used in Hong Kong must be registered. Travel eSIMs are not local prepaid cards and require no registration.
Under the latest Hong Kong government requirements, every operator must offer "iAM Smart" as an option for SIM card real-name registration. Hong Kong residents who register via iAM Smart can usually activate their SIM immediately; registrations submitted through the operator's own process require manual verification, which takes longer but normally no more than 24 hours.
